Fireworks over North Georgia's Gorgeous Lake Blue Ridge

by Rosemary Lewis

North Georgia is full of wonderful sights & sounds, and quaint mountain towns dot the landscape and offer a great variety of family activities. If you’re planning a cabin vacation in the north Georgia Mountains this year, you have many different activities to choose from. If you are in or can make to north Georgia on the Fourth of July, you do not want to miss the spectacular Firework display over Lake Blue Ridge. Rosemary Lewis, frequent visitor to the north Georgia mountains, shares her unique perspective.

You’ll hear a lot of “Oohs” and “Ahs” if you’re watching the fireworks over Lake Blue Ridge. The festivities are on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Lake Marina in the North Georgia Mountains. You can get there by taking GA Hwy 515 east to Windy Ridge Road. There’s a Conoco station and a Kentucky Fried Chicken on the corner where you turn. Go to the flashing red light and turn left onto Old Hwy 76. Follow this road to the marina, which will be on your right. You’ll see an old blue sign on Marina Road. There will be live music and a Bar-B-Q. The band usually starts around 1:00 or 2:00 PM, and the food is available between 4:00 and 6:00 PM, according to Marina officials. There’s nothing quite like listening to patriotic music, played by a live band, while looking at the pristine waters of Lake Blue Ridge, with the mountains as a backdrop. A large turnout is expected and parking at the marina is on a first come, first served basis. You can also park along Marina Road and along Old Hwy 76. There will be golf carts to shuttle you to the marina.

The fireworks start at dusk, usually around 9:00-9:30 PM, and they are at Lake Blue Ridge Marina and out over the sparkling lake. They’re truly an amazing sight to see. If you’re lucky enough to have your own boat, you can anchor or drift in the lake – the fireworks will explode right over your boat. Every year there are 200-300 boats to see the fireworks explode over the lake – there is no more gorgeous site in all of north Georgia. There are many festivities at the marina to entertain the children until the fireworks begin. It’s always very crowded; people come from all over Atlanta and north Georgia, so come early with your boat, or to find a great place to see the fireworks.
