Spring Easter Story/North Georgia Mountains

June 15th, 2010

Do you know where the story about Easter with baskets and bunnies originated?  My children had a book from Time Life that gave background on why certain traditions come with certain holidays and I always found the story about the Easter baskets, bunnies and eggs very interesting.

Here is how the story goes and I am paraphrasing my understanding of the story:

It had been a long, hard, winter and the children wanted to go outside and play but it was just too cold and wet.  The animials that lived near these children loved to watch the children play outside and anxiously awaited the arrival of the weather that would allow them to come out again.  The animals peered from underneath the foilage on a daily basis as the kids  ran and opened their front door hoping to find weather that allowed them to go out and play again.  When the forest animals saw the children continually being discouaged that they would EVER get to play outside again in warm weather. …….this is where the animals did something that “obviously” has lived on for years!

The birds, bunnies, and squirrels knew that spring weather was not far away and they needed to convey that to the children.  The small animals dug down under the snow and gathered beautiful green grass; the robins offered their beautiful blue eggs to lay ever so gently in the gathered grass,;the squirrels worked diligently on gathering fresh twigs that were easy to bend and form into a perfect basket with which to place the green grass and colored eggs……now all that was left was the animal to deliver the signs of  the warm ,spring weather that was to come.  After much chatter among the animal community it was decided that the bunny would be the deliverer.  He was soft, gentle and had such a kind face and all the animals agreed if the children looked out and saw him——–they would not be frightened.  So one night as the children slept, the furry, little bunny hopped up on to the childrens front porch and placed the beautiful basket that had been created by the animals of the forest.  What a delight to all when the children awakened the next morning and opened their front door to find the kindest of gifts from the forest animals.  When the children saw the beautiful basket they knew that the warm weather was not far away due to the basket and its contents.  This became an event that the children looked forward to every year as it gave them the promise of spring and the warm weather it ushers in.

Spring in the North Georgia Mountains is turly an awakening of nature at its best.  The rolling, multi-layered, dark green mountains lining the rivers lakes and streams, with the morning mist rising up to meet the bright yellow sun allows us those moments to realize that this earth really is a gift.  What a blessing to behold the spring canvas of the Lords creation.  A visit to a cabin along a stretch of North Georgia’s prestine waters is like finding a gift right outside your door every morning.  There is something so calming and interesting about watching and listening to the mountain air and water———–not to mention all the critters that are busy, busy, busy preparing for spring at its best.  People from all over the United States make their way to this little piece of heaven in the spring.  There are festivals, fairs and events all spring that appeal to just about everyone.

Spring time in the North West GA Mountains

March 25th, 2010

Daffodils, tulips, red buds…… are all just a few of the picturesque signs that spring is here.  A visit to the North Georgia Mountains at this time of year is beyond the word refreshing.  The small mountain town of Blue Ridge, GA begins their southern hospitality events in March every year and families are making the spring trips to Northwest Georgia a family tradition.

O n Saturday, April 3rd, the Blue Ridge Scenic  Railway will run the Easter Egg-spress .  It will depart at 4:00pm and return no later than 6:00pm. Children bring along their Easter Baskets and travel on the train a few miles out of town to farmer Brown’s field where the children hunt for the Easter Eggs and greet the Easter Bunny. For those 2 and above the fare is $16.00. No charge for those under 2 not occupying a seat.  It is a sight to warm the heart when all those little children show up with their laughter and giggles and jump up and down in one spot asking “when can we get on the train, when can we get on the train?!”  And to see their smiling faces when they return with their easter baskets over flowing with treats ——- well, you can’t help but smile.

Many families rent from Rainbow Cabins for a place to relax after a busy day in downtown Blue Ridge and the Easter Eggspress event.  Most of our cabins offer a great area for the kids to play and hide their eggs and all are on one of the beautiful bodies of water located in these North West Georgia Mountains.

We would love to accomodate you in one of our cabins and assist you in booking your Eggspress train ride.  Whether you’re a family of 20 or a party of 2—–Rainbow Cabins has a place for you.  Please visit our website at www.rainbowcabins.com or call us at 706-258-3678.  You may just find your vacation pot of gold at Rainbow Cabins.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway

March 12th, 2010

What a great time of year to visit a cabin in the north Georgia Mountains.  One of Rainbow Cabins  most requested cabins is SunsetRiver.  It sits 50 ft from the Toccoa River, has a hot tub that overlooks the water, fire pit and hammock, not to mention all the Toccoa River water life there is to watch and enjoy in the spring.

There is a very large field across from the cabin SunsetRiver and just on the other side of the field are the train tracks that host the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway.  As the train nears the famous Curtis Switch RR crossing it begins to blow its whistle.  Due to the fact you are in the mountains, the sound travels with an echo thru the little valley.  You cannot see the peoples faces in the open air cars as they pass in the distance but they all stand and wave as they pass the cabin and they get ever so excited when anyone waves back.  Like I said, it is a good 3 football fields away from this cabin but the passengers wave like they know you are watching for them!

Kids love the train as do many adults and it is a great treat for an afternoon adventure in the North Georgia Mountains.  The train runs from Blue Ridge, GA to McCaysville, GA and it is a 2 hour round trip and you get off the train in McCaysville for about an hour so you can plan on at least a 3 hour expedition.  It really is a great way to spend a spring afternoon and then return to your cabin on the waterfront for your evening around the camp fire.  For more information about the train times and rates you can visit BlueRidgeScenicRailway.com.

Horse back riding

March 8th, 2010

One of my dearest friends (Mac)  from Orlando, Florida (who also happens to be my college sorority”big sis”) comes to visit the north Georgia Mountains almost every summer.  I chuckle that she lives in the entertainment capital of the United States and brings her whole family to North Georgia for her cabin vacation———but I guess it is all relative.   When she stays in a large waterfront cabin, she invites her family from Knoxville, TN down to visit since it is only 2 and a half hours away.  But when she wants just some down time with her immediate family she chooses a smaller cabin that offers all the amenities she wants———–just not as much room.

I am not a big “horse person” although we do live in the middle of some gorgeous equestrian settings.  But Mac loves to go horseback riding with a company called “Blanche Manor” located in McCaysville, GA.  She and her family go at least twice every time they visit and just talk and talk about what a great experience it is.  She says it is a highlight that her over stimulated city children look forward to every year.  Her 14 year old daughter brings friends with her and they seem to really love the slow mountain life. She and her family usually spend a week or longer in the North Georgia Mountains and take advantage of all the outdoor activities the mountains offer and they love that you don’t have to stand in line to do so!

Cabins for families

March 6th, 2010

Sunset River is absolutely gorgeous and has become a favorite getaway spot for our family.  The quality time spent at Sunset River has brought our family closer together.  We play horseshoes in the front yard, go kayaking down the Toccoa, relax in the hottub, roast marshmallows and tell scary stories around the fire.  The best part about the time we spend together at Sunset River is that we don’t have an agenda.  There are no appointments or ballgames to attend.  We don’t have to spend money to have a good time or to entertain.  We can play hide and go seek or tag in the front yard and be reminded that the simplicities of life are what matter at the end of the day.  My husband and I were inspired to renew our wedding vows on the river in front of the cabin.  We could think of no other place where God’s presence is more evident.  Our family considers Sunset River a blessing and look forward to going back in the very near future!  Come see for yourself—you won’t be disappointed!

Girls Cabin Get Away

March 3rd, 2010

I am fortunate enough to have several groups of girlfriends (we are really all middle aged women but we affectionately refer to each other as “girls”).  Over the years we have whittled out the time to see each other if only for a night or two.  One of our favorite meeting spots is the cabin called SunsetRiver located in the North Georgia Mountains.  It has become a meeting place that continues to allow us to make  memories just like we did back in the day when we really were “girls”.

We usually arrive in the North Georgia Mountains in the evening on a Thursday or Friday afternoon/evening.  We all bring enough food to feed all of our husbands, children and relatives but it is a rule——–we leave all of them behind; this is OUR cabin weekend and we just eat THEIR food!  And even though we aren’t alcoholics——–if you peeked in thru the cabin windows you would see a table full of wines; merlot, cabernet, chablis, pinot, etc.  We want to be prepared just in case………………..well just in case.  You will probably also find a cigarette or two and even some swisher sweets!  Yes, we too can live right on the edge and if our children knew——-they would roll their eyes in embarrassment that their MOM’s would act this way.

We have a plethora of conversations and laugh until our sides hurt.  We cry off all our mascara and lay around in sweat pants and pajama’s all day.  We sit on the cabins front porch, rock in chairs and swing on the swing.  We eat constantly and all complain about the weight we have “put on” and then as the sun goes down and the air becomes crisp—-we build the fire by the water and move all our chairs around the fire pit.  I can’t begin to explain the feeling as all the stress from our busy lives seems to just float away.  We retell stories and probably become a little too loud—–but there are no other cabins on either side so their is no one to complain.

As the cabin weekend comes to an end we slowly pack all the food we didn’t eat (there’s no way that  we could begin eat all that food) and load the cars.  We stand by the river and cabin for our “end of cabin weekend” picture that none of us ever want anyone to see.  We pull out our calendars and plan the next cabin get away because we all need that “carrot dangling” to get us through the next  few months.  If you are needing a “get away” weekend we would love to assist you in picking a cabin that is just right for you.

Mountain Living

February 25th, 2010

It has taken me 5 years to get used to living in the country versus Atlanta suburban life.  Adjusting to Kroger, Publix, Malls and Wal Mart not being within 3 miles of my house was needless to say a bit “shocking”.  However on my last visit back to Atlanta —for the first time—–there was a yearning inside my heart to get back to the North Georgia mountains.  I  didn’t cry as I drove north of Marietta and noticed the hills and mountains entering my line of sight.  It was nice to go the speed limit (and a little more) for more than 5 miles without traffic congestion.  And when I would stop on the highway———I  could actually see the reason I stopped was because a traffic light was red.  I don’t know how many hours I spent stopped or creeping in Atlanta traffic to never figure out why I was ever stopped in the first place!  The road that takes me to the North Georgia Mountains is a 4 lane from Atlanta and  as I neared the little mountain towns —–the mountains seem to get closer and closer on each side of the road.  My death grip on the steering wheel started to ease and the tension of the busy city life was a memory in my rear view mirror.

I don’t know what switch flipped in me and maybe it wasn’t a switch——it was more like a light dimmer for 5 years that has finally switched off.  The slow pace of north Georgia mountain living is finally a welcome feeling in my life.  Although the city visits will always be something I will look forward to—-I mean convenience is a nice luxury–  but the mountains and small town people have become my home and I am just where the Lord intended for me to be.  I have always known that, but now I can finally say——-there is no place like home and my home is in the north Georgia mountains.

If you would like to visit a rental cabin in the north Georgia mountains  and leave the city life in YOUR rearview mirror– if only for a few days—-contact us at www.rainbowcabins.com.  We have a cabin waiting just for you!

Wintry Weather Adds Charm to North Georgia Cabin Vacation

February 18th, 2010

When snow is forecasted for the North Georgia Mountains – an excitement fills the air. Thoughts of walking along the sidewalks of a quaint southern town blanketed in a layer of white that’s tucked away in the Blue Ridge mountains appeals to just about everyone.

The store lined streets of Blue Ridge, Georgia are a picture perfect, winter postcard that offers warm, southern hospitality as you window shop and dart in and out of your favorite places. And one of my favorite places to visit any time of year, but especially on those brisk, winter days is the Beanery Café and Bakery.

Having eaten a lot of sandwiches and soups over the years, I can honestly say they have THE best tomato bisque and Reuben sandwich around. This delightful combo hits the right spot and warms me like I’m back home in my mom’s kitchen. It’s just the pick-me upper I need to finish my walk along Main Street Blue Ridge.

The Beanery also has a coffee shop that’s open for breakfast and lunch Monday thru Saturday and dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings. Whether you’re in the mood for a light, fresh baked cookie or cake, or you want a hearty breakfast or lunch, Beanery Café and Bakery is the place for great food.

I encourage you to seriously consider the next time you have an impulse to visit a tiny, southern town with lacy, snow covered trees in the heart of winter, you consider Blue Ridge. Rainbow Cabins can help you get into a cozy cabin for just two or your entire family – making that “winter dream” become a reality.

Renovation Begins on New North Georgia Mountain Cabin

February 11th, 2010

Dubbed as their largest, most ambitious project yet, Rainbow Cabins has announced it will begin renovations of its 10,000 square foot cabin that sits on 14-acres along 1000 feet of Fightingtown Creek near the town of Blue Ridge.

Work is expected to begin in March and last through November, with the first rentals occurring sometime before the end of the year. Affectionately known as simply “the Lodge,” Rainbow Cabins is offering 50% off a 4-night stay at the new cabin to the person that comes up with a new name for the cabin.

Once completed, “the Lodge” will include 6 to 8 bedrooms and 5 ½ bathrooms and be able to comfortably house up to 40 people at one time. It’s an ideal place for large family gatherings, church groups and corporate retreats.

In addition to its space, the Lodge will include many amenities such as an indoor, full-sized racquetball court, full game room, pool table, ping-pong table, workout area and more.

On the outside, visitors will be able to easily enjoy backyard trout fishing and tubing or river kayaking on Fightingtown Creek with tubes and kayaks provided free of charge.

North Georgia Cabin Renovation Continuing

January 29th, 2010

We announced last November the final phase of our renovation of the WhiteWater rental cabin near Blue Ridge, Georgia. While we’re working hard to get it ready for anxious guests as soon as possible, our January 1st deadline was pipedream it seems.

But the final phase is proceeding, albeit a bit slowly. This newest addition to our line-up of mountain rental cabins is a three bedroom, three bath enclave nestled along Fightingtown Creek. It includes many modern amenities like granite countertops, two indoor wood burning fireplaces, an outdoor patio with a hot tub and more.

The amenities are one thing…the view is quite another dimension altogether. WhiteWater sits among a dense forest of rhododendrons and hemlocks overlooking the creek, which is loaded with trout.

We require you stay at least three nights at WhiteWater and pay a $150 security deposit. While we’ve missed our January 1st deadline, we’re hoping to have it ready for rent by this summer.

Check back with us periodically for updates on this exquisite mountain rental cabin in the north Georgia mountains. We’re anxiously trying to get it ready for this year’s vacation season.
