Cherry Picking at Mercier’s

Monday, June 21st, 2010

I love cherries!  They’re my favorite fruit.   Maybe it’s because they’re not available all the time, like bananas.  Imagine my delight when I discovered that on special weekends Mercier’s Orchard in Blue Ridge, GA, invites people to take a ride out into their orchards and pick your own cherries.  What fun for the whole family.

Mercier’s also offers “You Pick ‘Em” opportunities for apples in the fall, strawberries in May, cherries in early June, and blueberries and blackberries in mid-late June.  While peaches are for sale in their store in early summer, they are not available for self-picking.   Your family can visit Mercier’s Store on Old Hwy 5, just down the road from the McDonald’s, and take a ride in a covered wagon that’s pulled by a tractor out into the orchards and fields.  Children love it.  The staff is so kind and helpful.  Be sure to call ahead to find out what fruit is in season, ready to be picked.  Their number is (706) 632-3411.

Mercier’s is known as Southern Living Magazine’s “Favorite Roadside Apple Market.”  But, it is so much more than that.  The Mercier family has been in business for over 50 years.  They have the largest orchard in the southeast.  They are open seven days a week, and don’t be surprised to find busloads of tourists there in the fall.   Mercier’s is especially known for the fried fruit pies, fritters and cider.  The staff is friendly and knowledgeable—willing to hand out free samples and advice on which fruit to buy.  If you don’t want to pick your own, their store has everything you need.  You can also get hot sauces, smoked trout, jams, jellies, sandwiches, baked goods and ice cream from the deli.  Be sure to browse through all the other shops inside the Market, which specialize in mountain décor, handmade soaps, and stationery.  The next time you are in the North Georgia Mountains, be sure to stop by for a unique mountain experience.

  Mountains 138

Imagine a place where you’re surrounded by deep forests and hazy mountains.  You can hear a creek rippling over its rocks.  A gentle breeze is blowing the sweet scent of mountain laurel, blooming on the hillsides.  A hawk is lazily circling overhead, floating on the air currents.  If we “cue the deer,” all will be perfect.

Now imagine your family, rocking beside you on a covered porch.  The television is off.  Nobody’s on her cell phone, talking or texting.  Nobody’s on his computer, playing video games.   Your family is actually talking to each other–sharing stories and laughing.  After a morning of swimming, fishing, tubing and kayaking in the creek out back, everyone is exhausted.  This afternoon you can do whatever you want.  There are no deadlines to meet, no boss to please.  You could go whitewater rafting, horseback riding, trail hiking–or you could play games with the kids.  When’s the last time you had a rousing game of Monopoly, Scrabble, or Chutes & Ladders??  You could even stretch out in the hammock, read a book or take a nap.

All these things are possible when you rent with Rainbowcabins.com in the North Georgia Mountains.  I know this because our family has chosen to spend our vacations here for the last several years.  We’ve been to the beach, to a dude ranch, to Europe, and other assorted destinations.  But, we prefer the slower paced, friendly lifestyle–not to mention the sheer beauty–of being in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Plus it is just about a one hour drive from Atlanta.  Rainbow Cabins offers all the luxuries of a fine resort , while staying in a secluded spacious log cabin.  One of our favorites is River Lodge because it offers king-sized beds, a ping-pong table as well as a billards table, real arcade games, kayaks and tubes that no other cabins offer.  It suits our family perfectly.

Spring Easter Story/North Georgia Mountains

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Do you know where the story about Easter with baskets and bunnies originated?  My children had a book from Time Life that gave background on why certain traditions come with certain holidays and I always found the story about the Easter baskets, bunnies and eggs very interesting.

Here is how the story goes and I am paraphrasing my understanding of the story:

It had been a long, hard, winter and the children wanted to go outside and play but it was just too cold and wet.  The animials that lived near these children loved to watch the children play outside and anxiously awaited the arrival of the weather that would allow them to come out again.  The animals peered from underneath the foilage on a daily basis as the kids  ran and opened their front door hoping to find weather that allowed them to go out and play again.  When the forest animals saw the children continually being discouaged that they would EVER get to play outside again in warm weather. …….this is where the animals did something that “obviously” has lived on for years!

The birds, bunnies, and squirrels knew that spring weather was not far away and they needed to convey that to the children.  The small animals dug down under the snow and gathered beautiful green grass; the robins offered their beautiful blue eggs to lay ever so gently in the gathered grass,;the squirrels worked diligently on gathering fresh twigs that were easy to bend and form into a perfect basket with which to place the green grass and colored eggs……now all that was left was the animal to deliver the signs of  the warm ,spring weather that was to come.  After much chatter among the animal community it was decided that the bunny would be the deliverer.  He was soft, gentle and had such a kind face and all the animals agreed if the children looked out and saw him——–they would not be frightened.  So one night as the children slept, the furry, little bunny hopped up on to the childrens front porch and placed the beautiful basket that had been created by the animals of the forest.  What a delight to all when the children awakened the next morning and opened their front door to find the kindest of gifts from the forest animals.  When the children saw the beautiful basket they knew that the warm weather was not far away due to the basket and its contents.  This became an event that the children looked forward to every year as it gave them the promise of spring and the warm weather it ushers in.

Spring in the North Georgia Mountains is turly an awakening of nature at its best.  The rolling, multi-layered, dark green mountains lining the rivers lakes and streams, with the morning mist rising up to meet the bright yellow sun allows us those moments to realize that this earth really is a gift.  What a blessing to behold the spring canvas of the Lords creation.  A visit to a cabin along a stretch of North Georgia’s prestine waters is like finding a gift right outside your door every morning.  There is something so calming and interesting about watching and listening to the mountain air and water———–not to mention all the critters that are busy, busy, busy preparing for spring at its best.  People from all over the United States make their way to this little piece of heaven in the spring.  There are festivals, fairs and events all spring that appeal to just about everyone.
